To fully understand the context and rationale for this short story told by Alfredo,you must watch cinema paradiso. Cinema paradiso is a classic, a must watch, sighz..though I'm going to spoil a bit of fun by revealing what Salvatore's take on this story after a heartwrenching relationship with his first love.
Salvatore to Alfredo(much later in the movie):
Now, I know why the soldier left after all that time. One more night and the princess would be his. But she might have broken her promise and that would have been terrible. It would have killed him. This way, at least for 99 nights he had lived with the illusion that she was waiting for him.
To me, the soldier left because after enduring all the pain, he came to the realization that someone who love him would never put him through all the pain.

i like salvatore's take on it. i think the princess most probably would break her promise, and he's be disappointed. lose-lose situation either way.
hmm... your take is not something new, because the princess hardly knew him, she probably never knew that he was alive, so how could she love him? it was just the illusion of the soldier that the was a slight chance of him getting her, and of course, in reality, the chance was close to 0.
Its just my take as to why he left in the end. The way I want to see it. I was not trying to state something new. :p

Sometimes we live with illusions. Ain't we, a lot of the times? Illusions make life very much nicer at times. The end of an illusion is not usually desired, it's the illusion that's important.

Yup, you make sense. :) There's a fine line between illusion and reality. While it is perfectly ok to treat stories as stories and just enjoy the illusory sweetness, in life, we all know what illusions and idealism can sometimes bring us - disillusion and heartbreak. One must try to find the balance bah.
